NSBE Space is a Special Interest Group of the Alumni Extension of the National Society of Black Engineers. Founded in 1974, NSBE is the largest student-managed organization in the country, with over 33,000 pre-college, collegiate, and professional members. The NSBE Alumni Extension was established in 1988, to provide an environment for professionals to contribute to the NSBE mission. NSBE Space was established during the 2004-2005 NSBE fiscal year as one of four Special Interest Groups to help develop technical content within the Alumni Extension.
The mission of NSBE Space is to stimulate the active participation of the community, with focus on the Black community, both within and beyond the engineering profession, in space-related activity.
This mission is a focused application of the overall NSBE mission, which is to increase the number of culturally responsible Black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact the community.
The purpose of NSBE Space is to enable NSBE-AE to serve as a bridge between NASA and the community, with focus on the Black community in an inspirational and educational capacity; to encourage the realization of the “One-NASA” vision within NASA centers; and to apply the technical expertise of its members to develop solutions to enhance the public and private space capabilities of the United States.
